Physical Education and Health

Physical Education and Health

Physical Education, Fitness and Health are core classes.

Health curriculum follows the ODE standards, found here: https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/health/Documents/2016ORHEStandards.pdf

The goals of Sellwood Middle School's Physical Education program are to teach students fundamental motor skills, movement concepts and sportsmanship, while leaving our students with an understanding of the benefits of an active lifestyle, and developing an enjoyment of physical fitness in general.

These goals are achieved in the following ways:

  • Motor Skills: In order to gain competency in motor skills and the movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities, skills related to individual and team activities are taught.
  • Motor Learning: Students gain an understanding of movement concepts, strategies and tactics through instruction and practice, while developing techniques for, improving performance, self-correcting and understanding rules of physical activities.
  • Active Lifestyle: Students are taught the benefits of physical activities as it applies to their health, self-image and lifetime fitness.
  • Physical Fitness: In order to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness, students learn to assess, analyze and apply fitness goals for an extended period of time.
  • Social Responsibility: Students are taught responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others when working to resolve conflicts, sharing and following rules. This leads to acceptance of others, sportsmanship and proper etiquette when interacting with others.
